Q. What is a co-operative and how does it operate?
   
A.

A co-operative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.

It operates based on the following principles

  1. Voluntary and open membership
  2. Democratic member control
  3. Members' economic participation
  4. Autonomy and independence
  5. Education, training and information
  6. Co-operation among co-operatives
  7. Concern for community

Q. Where is SGM located and how do I get myself there?
   
A.

It is located at House No. 785 Geylang Road next to Lorong 41. If you take the MRT, you can alight at the Paya Lebar MRT Station, or you can take bus service no 13, 21, 40, 67 and alight at the bus-stop facing Lorong 39.

   
Q. What are the differences between co-operatives and private enterprises?
   
A.

The differences between co-operatives and private enterprises are as follows:

  1. Co-operative follows the principle of one-member-one vote, while the Enterprise is determined by the type of shares held.
  2. Co-operative is an association of members but an Enterprise is an association of capital.
  3. The main objective of co-operatives is to serve members’ needs, but an the objective of an Enterprise is to maximize profits.
